Chris's Response
AB217 instructs Nevada school districts to refuse cooperation with federal immigration enforcement at school facilities. The framing in Carson City is that this protects children. The practical effect is that a federal officer pursuing a fugitive cannot enter a Clark County school without going through layers of administrative gatekeeping designed to slow the case down or stop it entirely.
School Resource Officers in this district will tell you what happens when criminal cases get tangled in jurisdictional disputes: cases die. Witnesses move. Fugitives leave the state. And the children Carson City told us we were protecting end up in the same neighborhoods, in the same after-school programs, alongside the people the federal warrant was for.
I support Nevada law enforcement at every level — local, state, and federal. We do not get to pick which laws apply to our schools based on the politics of the moment. I will vote to repeal AB217 and I will tell you exactly why on the floor.
