AB495 revises the provisions governing the circumstances under which the sponsor of a charter school that receives certain performance ratings under the statewide performance framework may revoke that charter. In plain English: it raises the bar a school district must clear before it can shut down a failing charter school.
Nevada parents who chose a charter school chose it specifically because they wanted accountability and outcomes. When a charter school is failing — bad reading scores, bad math scores, climbing chronic-absenteeism — the right response is to give the families a real off-ramp, not to make the sponsor jump through more procedural hoops before triggering one.
I will vote to restore the accountability standards on the charter-school side and to expand the family’s choice to leave any school — charter or district — that is not delivering.
