Who should set Nevada's health policy

Chris Brandlin and Rebelo make a federalism argument about public health: that Nevada, rather than Washington, should be setting Nevada's health policy.

The constitutional version of this is old and well worn — public health has historically sat close to the states' general police power, with the federal role built around interstate commerce, funding conditions, and agency guidance. The practical version is the more interesting one: state legislatures move faster, are easier to lobby as an ordinary citizen, and are far easier to hold accountable at the ballot box than a federal agency is.

The counterargument, which the clip does not spend much time on, is that fragmentation across fifty states produces inconsistency and duplicated cost. Both things are true at once.

What a state can actually change is the operative question, and it is why school food standards and PE requirements keep appearing in the children's health agenda — those are genuinely state-level levers. The bill record is at the Nevada Legislature.
