The Risk of Masks — and a Healthier, Smarter Nevada

His reading of the evidence on masking children

Chris Brandlin explains why he reads the evidence on masking schoolchildren differently than public health agencies did, and what he would prioritize for Nevada schools instead.

This is a contested area, and it should be labeled as one. Masking guidance for children was issued by federal and state health authorities during the pandemic and remains supported by many public health bodies; subsequent reviews of the trial evidence in community settings have been read by different researchers as showing anything from meaningful benefit to effects too small to detect. His position sits at the skeptical end of that range. It is presented here as his argument, not as consensus, and reasonable clinicians disagree about it.

The more actionable half of the video is the alternative he proposes: that the durable way to improve children's health outcomes in Nevada schools is nutrition, daily physical activity, and time outdoors — measures that are uncontroversial, entirely within state authority, and beneficial regardless of where anyone lands on the masking question.

That is the part with legislative content, and it connects directly to the children's health agenda and bringing real PE back to Nevada schools. School health policy is set through the Nevada Legislature and the state and district boards.
