Schools are Failing Our Children

The message to AD-42 parents

Chris Brandlin's education-reform message aimed directly at parents in Assembly District 42.

The argument is that outcomes, not effort, are the right measure — that the relevant question is whether children can read and do mathematics at grade level, and that most other debates are downstream of that. Nevada's proficiency and graduation figures are published by the state and have been a stable political fixture for long enough that no single administration can reasonably be blamed for them.

Pitching it to parents rather than to educators is deliberate. His contention is that parents are the constituency with both the strongest interest in the outcome and the least structured access to the decisions.
