What the Nevada Assembly actually controls

Chris Brandlin and Steve Sanchez work through the division between state and federal policy — specifically which decisions a Nevada Assembly member can actually make, and which ones are argued about in state races but decided elsewhere.

This is the most practically useful conversation in the library, because it draws the line most campaigns blur. Immigration enforcement, monetary policy, and federal healthcare programs are not Assembly matters, whatever a mailer implies. School standards, licensing, criminal statutes, the state budget, and public health authority are.

The argument for why AD-42 matters follows from that. A state legislature meeting 120 days every other year decides a large share of what people experience day to day, on a fraction of the attention a congressional race attracts. Every bill, sponsor, and recorded vote is published by the Nevada Legislature.
