Trans Fats and Seed Oils

A history that he argues is repeating

Trans fats then, seed oils now — Chris Brandlin's argument that dietary guidance has a pattern of endorsing something confidently and reversing decades later.

The trans fat half is not contested. Partially hydrogenated oils were promoted as the healthier alternative to animal fats for years, the evidence on cardiovascular harm accumulated, and they were eventually removed from the food supply. That reversal is documented history and it is the strongest part of his case.

The seed oil half is genuinely unsettled. The question of whether industrial seed oils are harmful at normal intakes is actively debated, the evidence is mixed, and confident claims in either direction outrun the data. He presents the parallel as a reason for humility about current guidance, and this page presents it as his reading rather than as established fact.
