Bulk Meat Order: Buying Direct
Aug 12, 2026
What a bulk order costs, and what it saves
Buying beef in bulk direct from the ranch — Chris Brandlin walks through what it actually costs up front and where the savings come from.
The arithmetic is the useful part. A quarter or half animal is priced closer to wholesale, so the per-pound cost drops sharply, but it arrives as a single large payment and requires freezer space most households do not have sitting empty. The saving is real; the barrier is cash flow and logistics rather than price.
The second effect is on the cut mix. A bulk order includes the whole animal, not just the popular cuts, which means learning to cook things a supermarket shopper never buys. For most families that is the actual adjustment.
For a district where grocery cost is a live issue, this is a concrete lever rather than a talking point. Related: supporting Nevada butchers and ranchers and sourcing fresh-frozen direct.
