Contrast Therapy 101

Aug 13, 2026

Hot to cold and back again

Chris Brandlin breaks down contrast therapy — alternating heat and cold exposure — and what the recovery research does and does not support.

The basic protocol is simple: heat, then cold, then repeat, usually finishing on cold. Sauna-and-cold-plunge is the version most people encounter. The proposed mechanism is vascular — vessels dilating in heat and constricting in cold — and the honest summary of the evidence is that subjective recovery and perceived soreness tend to improve more reliably than hard performance markers do.

He is careful about that gap, which is the right instinct. Something can be worth doing because it makes the next session feel better without needing to also be a performance breakthrough.

Nothing here is medical advice. Heat and cold exposure carry real risks for some cardiovascular conditions — check with a physician first.
